Combined with the double-digit unemployment rates in our communities and the epidemic of foreclosures, we know that we are living a crisis of epic proportions.
Doing Business In The Inner City
New Orleans native Kenneth Purcell and his wife have called 911 about 20 times in the past year to report break-ins and other crimes near their home and his business, located just three blocks apart in the city’s Warehouse District. But that hasn’t driven him from the inner city. His 25-employee software firm, iSeatz, is thriving, with sales last year of $38 million, up from $28 million in 2008. That success has been helped by what Purcell calls the “social capital” gained by creating local jobs when he moved back from Manhattan two years after Katrina.

With the economic future more uncertain than ever, it is critical that our pool of potential leaders be as large and varied as possible. But it isn’t at the moment. Hispanics are greatly underrepresented. They compose nearly 16% of the total U.S. population and will account for more 60% of population growth over the next 40 years. They are younger than the general population, with an average age of 27.4 compared with 36.8 for the population as a whole.

Luxury Brand Advertising Often Absent In Black Media
Due to the collapse of the American economy, all companies have slowed spending with advertising across the board. However, a snapshot of ad spending at 23 luxury parent companies that sell apparel, jewelry, timepieces, and accessories in the U.S. shows that most of these brands spent very little to no advertising dollars with black magazine titles.
Immigration Law Cutting Into Hispanic Hires
The new immigration law allows police to question and arrest illegal immigrants for trespassing and requires immigrants to carry work papers. The law also makes it illegal to pick up day laborers, and businesses could have their vehicles impounded if they transport undocumented workers or are driven by illegal immigrants.
