  • Women Journalists: Different Than Men?

According to Jill Abramson, the new executive editor of the New York Times, women journalists are the same as male journalists. “The idea that women journalists bring a different taste in stories or sensibility isn’t true,” Abramson told Times‘ public editor Arthur S. Brisbane. But, of course, she’s wrong.

For many years I wrote about the adult movie industry. I never would have been able to do what I did as a journalist covering so-called Porn Valley if I were a man.

Simply put, it wouldn’t have happened.

Yes, male journalists have written about the porn business: George Plimpton, David Foster Wallace, and Martin Amis among them. But, for the most part, they engaged in parachute journalism, getting in and getting out, and, in the process, failing to do much more than cull the most superficial information from a deeply complex world.

My first visit to an adult movie set was in late 1997. The last time I wrote a piece of long-form journalism about the porn industry (“They Shoot Porn Stars, Don’t They?“) was in 2009. During that time, I lingered on the sidelines as X-rated movies were made. I interviewed porn starlets, woodsmen, directors, producers, production assistants, makeup artists, and photographers. I watched as adult movies were made in London, Mexico, and across the U.S.

I never, ever would have gotten the access I did if I were a man. Male journalists looking to hang out in the porn scene for a story are suspected by many insiders to be more interested in seeing naked people having sex than generating journalism. Interviewed by male writers, most porn starlets will recite what they want to see written about them and not open a vein in self-exposure.
