  • When Experience Is Not on Your Side

Younger people tend to be the quickest to adapt. Technology that more “mature” business people are just now learning has often been used by younger individuals for quite some time.

At Upstart, we focus on delivering actionable information for young professionals and entrepreneurs, specifically those 20- to 40-year olds.

In many ways, youth can be a barrier to starting a business. You may appear to have less real-world experience, less “wisdom” and credibility. Especially in the eyes of older investors.

On the other hand, youth has it’s advantages. Today’s marketplace moves quickly, and younger people tend to be the quickest to adapt. Technology that more “mature” business people are just now getting used to has often been used by younger individuals for quite some time.

Energy also lends itself more easily to youth.

Jane Porter talks about these issues in her recent Entrepreneur Magazine article, entitled “How to Build Credibility as a Young Entrepreneur.” She mentions five tips for young people interested in starting their own business to leverage their strengths and downplay the apparent weakness that accompanies youth.

For Upstart’s core readership, this is definitely a piece that you’ll want to read. Here’s an excerpt:

You may be tempted to make yourself seem older or conceal your age, but it’s an unnecessary and possibly detrimental precaution to take… Instead, be confident and transparent. “If you can show that you’re mature and smart for your age, why not show it?”

Apologizing for your lack of experience and youth is also not a smart move… “If you are working with someone you have to apologize for your age with, it’s probably not a relationship you should be pursuing.”

Bottom line? Focus on what you’re good at and age won’t matter.
