  • Super Bowl: “Streaming” A New Revenue Stream

Now you may be able to take sports’ biggest game with you.

Relax football fans. The days of missing the big plays while you’re peering into the fridge are over. Now you may be able to take sports’ biggest game with you.

NBC and the National Football League announced today that for the first time they will stream the Super Bowl, scheduled for Feb. 5, plus two wildcard playoff games and the Pro Bowl. The online stream will be available at NBCSports.com and NFL.com through SNFExtra, a web package of technologies built to stream NBC’s Sunday Night Football games.

A mobile stream will be limited to Verizon mobile customers using the app NFL Mobile from Verizon. Video streaming will be free for customers of Verizon’s 4G LTE data service. For customers of Verizon’s 3G service, watching the video stream on the NFL Mobile app requires a $10 a month subscription.

NBC made it clear in their announcement that they do not see streaming cannibalizing the number of eyeballs to their television broadcast.

“By adding multiple camera angles, HD-quality video, DVR controls along with social interactivity, our online streaming represents a compelling, second-screen experience that nicely complements NBC’s on-air presentation,” said Rick Cordella, vice president of NBC Sports Digital Media.
