  • If You Lead, Will They Follow? Pt. 3

Is your achievement personal: are you tied to the team’s success? Will you push through barriers and say yes when everyone else says no? Will you make whatever needs to happen – happen?

As I started the “If You Lead: Will They Follow series, I thought it would be one or two articles, but there have been many comments, some great suggestions I would have not considered – and other demands, which I will not get into. Leadership is multidimensional and frenetic, yet somehow, a leader has to slow everything down, hear everything – see everything, and anticipate, so the job of a leader becomes less a job and more a commitment to specific lifestyle.

    1. Generosity – As much as a leader needs to be firm, even demanding from his workforce, from suppliers – from whomever makes the company better, even more so, he or she needs to generous – in spirit and action. People need to see an equilibrium, where the leader stays focused to the goals to operate and grow the company, yet the leader must show laughter, connection and compassion. He or she also has to help people find their very best and push them into a bigger moment, which benefits them both.
    2. Initiative – Are you someone, who waits for absolute instruction, or do you start to problem-solve on your own. Do you look to improve processes and products, or will you hope that someone notices what you already recognize, and let them address the issue.
    3. Listening – Can you listen and hear: listen to what people are saying, but hear what they’re not saying. Will you interrupt someone junior, or listen attentively. Will you allow other ideas to resonate, even if they reduce your own – can you hear improvements that are demarcated with your signature?
    4. Passion – Is your achievement personal: are you tied to the team’s success? Will you push through barriers and say yes when everyone else says no? Will you make whatever needs to happen – happen?

It is important that if you are a leader, or aspiring to be one, that you know the dynamism a leader will need to personalize, on a day-to-day basis – and somehow still take care of his family and his own needs. It’s tough, which is why so few get it right.

    Good luck.
