  • “The Disruptors” Seth Godin’s Purple Cow Part 6: Purple’s Passionate Purpose

If you could become a Purple Cow, would you? Why? What are the barriers — what would be the steps to take to get there? Then what are you waiting for?

You’ve got to love it, sometime hate what it’s becoming, reconcile it to its original purpose and let it rip. If you have this type of passion, you can transform your business into a Purple Cow.

As part of Upstart: Business and Management for 20-40 Year Old Professionals initial “Disruptor” series, we are looking at Purple Cow (2003 (Portfolio/Penguin) by Seth Godin. It’s our fourth installment from Purple Cow.

Rule 6: Love what you are doing, and work the hell out of it, until it becomes something important.

What will you do to become world class: will you continually dismember the company – the culture – the processes and the performance to find

the right formula to become a Purple Cow?

It’s hard, because whenever we get some success, we dig in there and plant our flag. But if you have Purple Cow expectations, you have to build the uniqueness into your company from day one – it’s not something that can be bought: it can only be refined and burnished by the people implementing it, and they are pretty fussy about it being that way.

Will your passion demand that you ask yourself the hard and inconvenient questions about your performance and customer satisfaction,  and whether you want the asylum of the middle-of the pack, or the risk and reward of being an outlier?

People think becoming a Purple Cow is about painting everything in the office bright orange, or having some crazy ad campaign: no, Purple Cow’s are first about passion and then performance – Purple Cow’s have found ways to do ordinary things remarkably, where the value is so great and so conspicuous – that people will pay a premium not only for the desired effect, but they become loyal evangelists for the company.

If you could become a Purple Cow, would you – why – what are the barriers — what would be the steps to take to get there: then what are you waiting for?

    Good Luck.
