  • Oprah: Out of Sight, Out of Mind?

Ms. Winfrey’s mistake: not finding a few standout new stars, which she would have cultivated the last two years of the show, and have them transition to the new network with a fan base already. It’s really hard to start from scratch, but if anyone can pull this out, and we at Upstart: Business and Management for 20-40 Year Old Professionals are hoping she does: it’s Oprah Winfrey.

Oprah Winfrey is experiencing the human realities that most of us in business face: the fickleness of our audience.

Since Ms. Winfrey abdicated her highly-rated, culture-changing, talk show – some of her additional business properties have suffered. It’s is widely recognized that the OWN Network, is struggling out the gate, which was anticipated, but it’s been the magazine property, which is has suffered dramatic shrinkage in advertising space.  O magazine has a 31.4% decline in advertising for August and September looks even worse.

I have a theory: out of sight, out of mind.

There was no one more ubiquitous than Oprah Winfrey, and even though she is very much still around, possibly even more than before, but because she is not seen, visibly, as she once was – many people have moved on. They believe the Oprah era is over and she’s gone, even though she’s repurposing platforms and trying to go even bigger.

It just shows that even a beloved audience can look for new measures of inspiration – it’s the evolving nature of business.

    Good Luck.
