  • Want a Job: Know Where to Go

It’s not only imperative, but also smart and efficient to go where the jobs are, but it takes flexibility and making peace with the reality that you might need to change industries or job titles to go forward.

It’s not only what you know – sometimes not even, who you know – but where to go.

Many of the long-term unemployed or underemployed are looking for work within industries that are still contracting, and will do so for some time, so it’s not the best strategy to secure a new position. The best thing is to find something complimentary to your experiences and skill-sets that is within an industry, which has some current growth or is forecasting expansion.

In the Wall Street Journal article, The Industries That Are—and Aren’t—Hiring, Cristina Lourosa-Ricardo, details exactly where the jobs are.

In The Industries That Are—and Aren’t—Hiring, Lourosa-Ricardo states, “There are many reasons U.S. companies give for their lack of robust hiring — from weak consumer spending to uncertainty over the direction of government policies on debt and spending….Some industries have significantly boosted employment over the past year while others continue to shed workers. But even those adding jobs are hiring far fewer than would be needed to put America’s 14.1 million unemployed back to work….Here’s what it looks like on the ground in some industries.”

It’s not only imperative, but also smart and efficient to go where the jobs are, but it takes flexibility and making peace with the reality that you might need to change industries or job titles to go forward. I know you can do it – press on.

    Good Luck.
